If you've ever wanted to take a look at what a modern version of Final Fantasy IX might look like, then we have some good news for you!

The team of over 50 individuals behind the non-playable fan game Final Fantasy IX: Memoria Project has released a 25-minute video showing off the Unreal Engine 5 recreation of the city of Alexandria, complete with newly-recorded voice acting and a huge graphical update that still manages to retain much of the charm and elegance of the original designs.

The Memoria Project, in case you've never heard of it, is an entirely non-profit passion project, which recreates the opening section of the 2000 Squaresoft title Final Fantasy IX. It has been in development for a while now and isn't meant to be viewed as a playable product at all, but merely a tribute to a beloved game that many have longed to see reimagined.

The latest video starts off by showing us its depiction of Princess Garnet, before dropping down to the streets of Alexandria, where the Black Mage Vivi watches the arrival of the Tantalus Theatre Company (the event which kickstarts the game's plot) to a rendition of the main Final Fantasy theme.

It then shows a glimpse of what the gameplay for a modern Final Fantasy IX remake might look like, with Vivi being able to reexperience the classic skipping rope game from the original with a brand new makeover, interact with various familiar NPCs in full 3D (as opposed to a fixed camera perspective), and poke around inside a bunch of faithfully reconstructed buildings.
